April 7 – 10, 2026

Embark on a journey through Portugal’s Alentejo wine region, where rolling vineyards produce wonderful wines. Savor rich flavors and aromas while exploring historic villages and picturesque landscapes. Experience the passion of winemaking in this celebrated Portuguese wine region.

Hosted by The Globe and Mail’s Senior Business Writer & Columnist, Rita Trichur, the 3-day Alentejo pre-tour is for 40 guests only and includes a three-night hotel stay in the Evora, Portugal area with two days of wine and culture themed excursions and dinners.

DAY ONE
Tuesday, April 7, 2026

We begin our journey in Lisbon at the Aeroporto Humberto Delgado. A 90 minute drive takes us to our hotel, the Convento do Espinheiro Historic Hotel, just outside of Evora.  The Convento do Espinheiro hotel is a former 15th century convent, that has been meticulously restored to preserve its majestic architecture and frescoes that tell of centuries of devotion, art and silence. Évora is a captivating UNESCO-listed town in Portugal, where Roman ruins, medieval charm, and whitewashed alleys reveal centuries of rich history.  Once you’ve checked into your room, you have time to explore the town. This evening, we host a Welcome Reception at our hotel where you will meet and mingle with your Globe host and fellow guests.

DAY Two
Wednesday, April 8, 2026

This morning enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting off on one of two fabulous excursions options.  Today, your choices include:

Option 1 - A wine and olive oil tasting followed by lunch in Monsaraz

Transfer to Herdade do Esporão, a beautiful estate, located near the historical city of Reguengos de Monsaraz (45 minutes from Évora). Its history dates back to the 13th century and its borders have been maintained virtually unchanged since then. The estate is included in the World Wine Route and is a renowned wine and olive oil producer which proudly makes the best products from what nature provides, in a responsible and inspiring way. Tour the cellars, and the vineyards and enjoy a wine tasting while learning about the history, culture, and tradition of the region. The experience concludes with a visit to the olive oil mill with a tasting of 6 extra virgin olive oils. Then, it's time to head to Monsaraz and have lunch at the traditional Sabores de Monsaraz. Meet the soul of this restaurant, Mrs. Isabel, the cook and a great character that you will remember dearly. In the afternoon, you will visit Monsaraz, a stunning medieval village. Wander through its picturesque streets, admire the traditional whitewashed homes, explore the imposing Castle, visit the beautiful 16th-century Church of Nossa Senhora da Lagoa, and take in the village museum.  This tour is approximately 7.5 hours in duration.

Option 2 - Evora Historic Walking Tour

Explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, with more than five thousand years of history, in the company of your knowledgeable guide. From the Praça do Giraldo, lined with its attractive townhouses with intricate wrought-iron balconies,  stop at the Roman Temple of Évora with its large Corinthian columns that date back to the reign of Roman Emperor, Augustus. Next will be a visit to the Romanesque Cathedral of Evora, built-in 1186, and considered to be one of the most sacred sites in Portugal. Head on next to visit the Saint Francis Church with the “Capela dos Ossos”, a famous bone chapel built by 16th-century monks who wished to contemplate and communicate the message of the transitory nature of life. This tour is approximately 3 hours in duration.

This evening enjoy an independent dinner at our hotel, The Convento do Espinheiro hotel or take a short taxi ride to the town of Evora and dine at one of their many wonderful restaurant options.

DAY THREE
THURSDAY, April 9, 2026

Once again, after enjoying a lovely breakfast at our hotel, you have a choice of two culinary excursions:

Option 1 - Fitapreta Wine Tasting

No visit to Alentejo is complete without a tasting of the region's wines. You will go to Paço do Morgado de Oliveira (approximately 15 minutes from Évora), a medieval Paço that was founded in 1306. The Fitapreta winery covers about 100 hectares in the Alto Alentejo region. You will learn about the history of the winery, the place, as well as the winemaking processes, while tasting 5 wines paired with a cheese board from local producers. This tour is approximately 3 hours in duration.

Option 2 - Evora Food & Culture

Embark on a culinary journey through Évora's enchanting streets, where a food tour unfolds a tapestry of flavors reflecting the region's rich culinary heritage. It is a city of strong culinary traditions, gloriously inventive, and you will try its best flavors at different stops. Get ready to never look at bread the same way again, to try rich soups and stews, and to discover the friendly presence of coriander and pennyroyal, even in homemade liqueurs. Each stop, bite, and sip will invite you to savor the essence of Évora's gastronomic traditions, while learning about the history of the city.  This tour is approximately 3 hours in duration.

Private Group Dinner at Évora, Cavalariça
MICHELIN Guide Portugal 2025 Évora

Tonight you’re in for a special treat with a group dinner at Cavalariça in the heart of Evora. In the UNESCO World Heritage city of Évora, Cavalariça has found its second home in the 14th-century Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval. Under the creative direction of Executive Chef Catalina Viveros and Chef Manager Tomoe Hayase, the restaurant combines Alentejo culinary traditions with global inspiration, served in a space where vibrant African art meets the sophistication of French design.

DAY FOUR
FRIDAY, April 10, 2026

We leave the Alentejo region this morning and travel by coach to Lisbon, approximately a 90 minute drive. After checking into our elegant hotel in the city centre, Hotel Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa, a landmark luxury hotel offering timeless elegance, rooftop views, and a prime location on Lisbon’s grandest boulevard, you will have a bit of time to relax at the hotel or explore the neighbourhood before we kick off the main tour, and enjoy a celebratory welcome reception hosted by our Globe journalists and meet your fellow guests.
